What’s the UK’s Simpler Recycling Legislation All About?
Introduced in 2023 by Defra (the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs), Simpler Recycling is here to take the guesswork out of recycling. It’s all about making recycling easier for everyone, so we know exactly what goes in which bin – no more confusion on bin day!
By March 31st 2025, businesses and non-household premises with 10 or more full-time employees need to start separating their waste into plastics, paper, card, glass metals (like cans and foil) and food waste – away from the general rubbish. This is all part of helping save resources and supporting the UK’s circular economy.
The rules apply to all kinds of places, like businesses, schools, hospitals and any other premises with 10 or more employees, no matter how many people are working on site at once. So, even if a business has a few locations with fewer than 10 employees each, they still need to follow Simpler Recycling if the total number of employees across all sites adds up to 10 or more.
What If My Business Has Fewer Than 10 Employees?
Businesses with fewer than 10 employees have a bit more time – until March 31st, 2027 (pending confirmation).
March 2025
Business with 10 employees or more must adopt a Simpler Recycling Initiative.
March 2026
Local Authorities must provide service to households that conform to Simpler Recycling initiative.
March 2027
All businesses including those with less than 10 employees will need to adopt Simpler Recycling Initiative.
